Back in 1983 several
local mothers found that they traveled in many of the same circles:
doctors offices, classrooms, CSE waiting rooms and pharmacies. Driven by
their common frustrations and concerns, they soon found kinship in sharing
their stories and skills with each other. They observed their common
experiences with available "programs" and reinforced what they
already knew; that families were the experts when it came to special needs
kids.
Our founders, as
parents and guardians of developmentally disabled children have left us
a legacy of family empowerment and a clear mission born
out of very personal
experience: we exist to enhance the ability of the family to provide care
for their disabled member. We remain committed to their
ideals of improving the
quality of the everyday lives of special needs families and invite your
comments and assistance in continuing our mission while
keeping in step with the new
challenges we all face as parents, educators, advocates and caregivers
of children with extraordinary lives in these very extraordinary times.
Parents of Special Children, Inc. is a nonprofit
organization. We are funded by the New York State
Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD),
private donations and local fund raising events. We are a parent driven organization, dedicated to family empowerment and improving the quality of the everyday lives of special needs families. The primary service we provide is family support reimbursement for respite.
PSC is located in Fulton in the heart of Central New York. Our staff consists of our Family Services Coordinator, a Family Resource Specialist, clerical and parent volunteers. We operate through a 15 member Board of Directors that is dedicated to being accessible to families so that we may gain insight on which to build policy and facilitate decision making. We encourage families to contact the office for information and referral and assistance in searching for specialty items. Our on-site library is a valuable resource to families and we welcome requests for items of interest to be purchased for our permanent and lending collections.
We welcome your inquiries as a family member, friend, educator, advocate or caregiver of person with special needs. We are the only organization of our kind in Oswego County. Please be sure to let us know how you heard about us.

Our lending library
is open to the public during office hours. In addition, we provide
information and referral services, quarterly newsletters and PSC
sponsored seminars and training. Families are asked annually,
through our Program Evaluation Survey, to rate the organizations
performance in the services we provide. We ask that you
complete these evaluations with care; we rely on family input
when planning events and planning the future direction of the
organization. |
